Mustique has a wonderful mix of beaches: white sand; black sand; fine sand; rough sand filled with miniature shells; beautifully rounded stone beaches and beaches covered in washed up corals of all kinds.
Lotty's new print design "Coral Stone" is inspired by the brain coral which, when alive, can grow to an enormous boulder size and creates a beautiful sea-life home. It is a very slow growing coral and can live a long time, some have been known to live for as long as 900 years.
It has a grooved, wrinkled surface that resembles the folds of a human brain, which is how it got its name. This surface is made up of living coral polyps, which are tiny, soft-bodied animals that secrete a hard, calcium carbonate skeleton. These polyps extend their tentacles at night to catch food and retract them during the day for protection.
Once the coral has died, as the result of a storm perhaps, it eventually comes to the shore. When it has dried out completely you see the polyps very clearly and Lotty has painted them to create the Coral Stone design:
