The rainforests of our neighbouring island, St. Vincent, abound with fern trees which grow to a terrific size and can tower over one's head, or one can walk past banks of ferns growing as a wall tumbling down to a stream in the steamy, humid shade of the larger trees. The curled end of the fern leaf before it fully opens is such a perfect shape and so similar to the curl of a shell, no doubt they both share the same mathematics of a fibonacci spiral. I find the proportions in nature so often produce the perfect composition, seemingly unguided, and unrestricted and haphazard, but then again, is it? Or is there an underlying plan uniting all...?
